Augmentative Alternative Communication approach to increase socio-educational operators’ competencies for fostering the inclusion of people with disabilities

ERASMUS+ KA220-VET - Cooperation partnerships in VET

Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) is an approach that aims to offer an alternative modality to those who, in addition to being excluded from verbal and oral communication due to congenital or acquired pathologies also have cognitive deficits, more or less severe. Through a set of strategies, tools and techniques, AAC does not propose to replace verbal language; rather, it “augments” it by accompanying the word to the symbol and supporting the verbal production and eventual emergence of verbal language of people with difficulties.

The AAC 4 INCLUSION project aims to raise awareness and to train operators working with people with disabilities in the use of this peculiar approach, strengthening and updating their technical-professional skills so that they can respond more and more effectively to the communication, social and therefore inclusion needs of their users. Developing one's communication skills is an essential requirement to empower people who cannot communicate verbally to express a primary need, a choice, a preference, to voice their thoughts and interact with others.

After an initial research phase aimed at mapping the professional development needs of practitioners in this specific area and highlighting the possible use of the CAA approach or other similar good practices to support people who are precluded from verbal and oral communication, a special Vademecum will be outlined. The Vademecum will contain technical directions, strategies, and operational tools for the professional use of CAA and its contents will be used as the basis for training a group of practitioners selected by each sectoral partner. The partnership -indeed- is made up of four key sector partners (CEPISS, IMPULSA IGUALIDAD, GIMEM, MORAL COMPASS) which, in various ways, work to support the social, training, and educational inclusion of people with disabilities. Once trained, practitioners will use the techniques learned directly with their users, contributing to an increasingly inclusive training and educational system.
