Course Overview: The course focuses on leveraging outdoor education to enrich cultural heritage teaching. Participants will explore how natural and cultural environments can be used as immersive learning spaces, enhancing the educational experience through hands-on, sensory activities. The course blends theoretical insights, visit at historical places (the price of the ticket is to be paid by the participants) are with practical exercises to foster a deep connection with cultural heritage.
MAIN TRAINING PROGRAM
Day 1: Introduction to outdoor education and cultural heritage
- Introduction to the concepts and benefits of outdoor education, particularly about cultural heritage.
- A guided visit to a local park or cultural site to observe and document natural and cultural elements.
- Creating a map of the site visited, identifying key cultural and natural features—and discussing how to use maps for educational purposes.
Day 2: Sensory and cross-cultural learning
- Sensory-based activities at a historical garden (e.g., Boboli Gardens), focusing on touch, smell, and hearing to connect with the environment.
- How to incorporate sensory learning into cultural heritage education.
- Using the sensory experiences to create and share stories that connect cultural heritage with personal sensory experiences.
Day 3: Experiential learning techniques
- A guided walk through a historical site to take on roles (e.g., historical figures) to bring the past to life.
- The role of experiential learning in making cultural heritage accessible and engaging.
- Group work to design their outdoor experiential learning activity focused on cultural heritage.
Day 4: Creative expression in cultural heritage
- Creating art inspired by a selected heritage site's cultural and natural surroundings.
- The role of creative expression in understanding and preserving cultural heritage.
- Developing a plan to integrate art activities into their educational practices.
Day 5: Reflection and evaluation
- A guided walk to reflect on their experience.
- Sharing insights and challenges faced during the course.
