Day 1: Introduction to the Florentine Renaissance
- Overview of the Renaissance – its origins, key figures, and the role of Florence in its development.
- Ice-breaking session and group discussion on participants' prior knowledge and expectations.
- Walk through Florence to introduce key Renaissance landmarks.
- Reflection on the historical context and its influence on Renaissance art.
Day 2: The Masters of the Renaissance – Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and other relevant painters
- In-depth study of relevant paintings and sculptors of the Renaissance period – their lives, works, and contributions to the Renaissance.
- Visit to the “Uffizi Gallery
Day 3: The Medici family and their patronage
- The influence of the Medici family on the arts – how their patronage shaped the Renaissance.
- Group project on the impact of Medici patronage on specific artists and works.
- Tour of the Medici Chapels and the Basilica of San Lorenzo, exploring the artistic heritage commissioned by the Medici family.
- Reflection on the relationship between power, politics, and art.
Day 4: Architectural marvels of the Renaissance
- The Renaissance's architectural innovations focused on Brunelleschi’s dome and other Florentine structures.
- Comparative study of Renaissance and Gothic architectural elements.
- Visit to the Florence Cathedral (Duomo) and climb to the top of Brunelleschi’s dome for firsthand experience of Renaissance architecture
Day 5: Art in the every day – exploring Florentine art beyond the museums
- Renaissance art in the public and private spheres – frescoes, sculptures, and everyday objects.
- Analysis of lesser-known artworks in Florence’s streets, churches, and palaces.
- Walking tour will focused on hidden gems of Renaissance art in Florence, including minor churches and public spaces.
- Group discussion on the week’s learnings, followed by course feedback and conclusion.
